You may find yourself here because you’ve had the experience of being in a toxic relationship that left you feeling horrible about yourself and brought confusion, pain, and suffering. You may currently be in an unhealthy relationship that does not serve you or you might have escaped a toxic relationship but have not healed completely from this experience. You might have some conscious or unconscious awareness that you keep repeating a pattern of engagement in unhealthy, toxic relationships and are seeking to change this pattern. You have questioned if you are in a relationship with a narcissist.

I know the journey can be full of confusion and it can feel lonely and you do not have to do this alone. I am a therapist in New York City and I provide therapy to individuals who have endured narcissistic abuse. I help individuals understand narcissism and find healing after the whirlwind of being in an unhealthy relationship.

Narcissistic abuse does not only occur with romantic partners, it can also be experienced in relationships with family members, friends, co-workers and bosses, neighbors, and anyone you have a relationship with.

Red flags that may reflect a toxic relationship:

  • You feel like you are walking on eggshells

  • You feel alone

  • You experiences gaslighting (gaslighting is a manipulation tactic that makes the victim question their emotions, sanity and ultimately leads to deep insecurity and low self-esteem)

  • The relationship feels like a roller coaster (the relationship does not feel stable and consistent and you often feel confused and without a sense of peace or trust)

  • Your needs are diminished and you may experience shame for having your own needs

Experiencing narcissistic abuse can have the following impact on you:

  • You develop low self-esteem, low confidence and a poor sense of self

  • You do not feel safe to be yourself

  • You feel emotionally or even physically detached from your environment

  • Increase in anxiety in other relationships and difficulty with trust

  • You believe your experiences are invalid and question your thoughts, feelings, and judgement

  • You feel lost and alone

How therapy can help

After experiencing narcissistic abuse you may find yourself anxious or sad (or both) with low self-esteem and self-doubt, while feeling alone and having difficulty trusting in relationships. Therapy can help you heal and build a healthy sense of self in which you feel confident and secure. Through therapy, you can gain awareness of narcissistic abuse in order to minimize the long term impact of the abuse. You can develop boundaries that protect you and empower you. Most importantly, therapy can lead you to connecting to your true self to acknowledge your resilience, self-worth and strengths, while understanding that the narcissist is the problem and not you.
